Methodology

How our crypto price predictions are made

Search for almost any coin’s price prediction and you will find confident single numbers — “$X by 2030” — with no explanation of where they came from. We do not publish those, because nobody can forecast crypto prices to that precision. Instead, every page on ICO Listing Online is built from the same four ingredients.

  1. 1

    Market data

Each forecast starts from the latest market price, refreshed automatically from market data providers, so the numbers stay current without manual edits.

  2. 2

    Volatility by asset class

Every coin is assigned to a volatility class based on its size, age and type. The annual volatility for each class is shown in the table below. More volatile assets get wider ranges.

  3. 3

    Average, minimum and maximum

The average path applies a modest long-run growth assumption for each asset class (table below). The minimum and maximum widen around it in line with volatility — quickly in the first three years, then more slowly, because surviving assets have historically become less volatile over time. Roughly two in three outcomes should fall inside the range.

  4. 4

    Human research

The model supplies the numbers; the analysis comes from people. For each coin our analyst researches what the project does, what is likely to drive demand, the risks, and the data worth watching, using official documentation, governance records and reputable reporting.

What this model cannot do

It cannot see the future. It does not know about an upcoming upgrade, a hack, a listing or a lawsuit. It assumes volatility stays roughly where it has been, which is often wrong in a crash or a mania, and it will miss extreme outcomes more often than the percentiles suggest because crypto returns have fat tails. Use the ranges to understand how much a price could plausibly move — not to decide what it will do.

Questions

Price Prediction FAQs

How accurate are crypto price predictions?

Not very — anyone who claims otherwise is overselling. Crypto prices are driven by news, liquidity and sentiment that cannot be forecast precisely. That is why we publish ranges with a stated probability instead of single targets, and why we explain the method behind every number.

Why is the average growth assumption so modest?

Because a forecast that assumes big gains makes every coin look like a buy. We use a small long-run growth rate for each asset class, published in the table above, and let the minimum and maximum columns show how far the price could realistically move either way.

Why are the 2040 and 2050 ranges so wide?

Because crypto is volatile and four years is a long time. A coin that moves 80% a year in either direction can plausibly end up at a fraction of its starting level or several times it. A narrow range decades ahead for a volatile asset would be false precision.

Which coins are covered?

The top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation on CoinMarketCap. Stablecoins are included, but because they are designed to stay at $1 (or €1), their pages analyse how well each one holds its peg rather than projecting a price.

How often are the predictions updated?

Scenario ranges are recalculated automatically from market data, and headlines roll over to the new month on the 1st. The written analysis is reviewed when something material changes for a project, such as a major upgrade, unlock or regulatory event.

Can projects pay for a better prediction?

No. Every number comes from the same model and no project can pay to change its inputs. Advertising on ICO Listing Online is labelled and kept separate from editorial content, as set out in our editorial policy.
